Are your surroundings making you toxic?

All of us have an unconscious tendency to observe and mirror behaviour & actions of those around us. This is called the mirror neuron system and can be observed in humans, primates and in birds.
You would have observed yourself picking up accents, behaviours and even certain phrases from people around you. This takes place at an unconscious or subconscious level.
Certain groups of people don’t just echo the sentiments of the group but also find comfort there. They prefer to stick with limiting beliefs rather than face change and growth. While this is true for most people, the people most likely to succeed are those who challenge the status quo, who develop their own ability to think and react.
What is the one main thing that stands out for these trail blazers?
It’s their ability to seek out and build a strong network of people around them who are positive. The mirror neuron system (MNS) works beautifully in creating positive associations and success factors in our own lives through this positive association.
Why is it important to surround yourself with positive and growth oriented people?
Successful people think differently. My own experience of this has been fantastic. When purchasing my first property, there were many areas to contend with. Preferred properties were usually just beyond my price range. I remember discussing this with an acquaintance who was successful and had built his own brand and company from scratch. He advised, “If you like a property, don’t get bogged down by details. Don’t say it’s out of my price range. Figure out how you can extend yourself and make the leap. Do not purchase a less preferred property just because it comes within your price range. Take the leap of faith. It’s important to like the property. A few lakhs will not make a difference in the long term.”
This advice made me take a good decision and created a long term positive association in my mind. I have never regretted my decision and have seen only positive come out from that purchase.

What happens when we surround ourselves with positive and successful people?
Well, some of their magic rubs off on us. We start to feel their emotions, their excitement and their vision. I’ve found that even reading biographies about those whom you admire, helps. Having these positive role models in your life diffrentiates you from the crowd. You are no longer part of the crowd but are a trail blazer.
The Success Formula
Jack Canfield defines success as Event + Reaction = Outcome.
Events in our life do not define us or take us to the desired output. It is our reaction that makes all the difference. A positive reaction will result in a positive outcome while a negative reaction will take you towards a negative result.
Even reading biographes and understanding what makes the people we admire tick, starts imprinting itself into our mindset. We subconsciously start to mirror them and slowly start to emulate their thoughts. We start thinking & reacting differently, thereby changing the outcome.
Success Begets Success / Money Attracts Money
I have heard these phrases many times in my life. It’s the success and money vibration that does the trick. Being around successful people or even reading about them initiates the mirror neuron system in you.
Start by identifying whom you admire and what about them truly inspires you. You may admire people from the past or present, famous or those around you who have found success. Read their story or spend time with them. Slowly start identifying with their success mindset. You will start seeing the change in your own lives.
My Inspirations
I am inspired to a great extent by Jamshetji Tata, the founder of the Tata Group. His biography by R.M. Lala, ‘For the love of India’ always inspires and moves me. The kind of legacy he left in the world and the leaders he created is beyond great.
‘The Autobiography of a Yogi’ by Paramhansa Yogananda is another such book that I first started reading at age 15. My mother shared this book with me and asked me to ready the chapter ‘Two Penniless Boys in Vrindavan’. That got me started on my spiritual journey and I’ve always felt blessed.
Start your own success journey. You know you have what it takes to be great. Greatness starts with just a small step. Being true to yourself. Being driven. Being different. Being extraordinary. Maybe even being outrageous.
What are you waiting for?
